Adventure in Ice and Snow

A Glittering Sea of White

Snowshoeing on the Alpe di Siusi
If you want, you can get a true taste of adventure on the snow-covered slopes of the Alpe di Siusi and experience the pristine "wild" winter landscape up close. Here you can put on your snowshoes and move freely about, traversing snow-filled meadows and even making your way through deep snow with ease, the way hunters and farmers used to do it. You can go on an adventure, undertake extensive tours through unspoiled landscapes, and experience natural beauty in a completely new and unusual fashion. And the best part of it is that you don't need any special abilities, skills, or training to use snowshoes. Furthermore, modern snowshoes are equipped with advanced technology: A flexible binding, special crampons for traversing "harsch" ice, and low weight guarantee pleasant going. Equipped with this special technology, you can explore this region – which offers an enormous number of different routes – and discover interesting places and breathtaking vistas which are virtually inaccessible by other means. You will be able to appreciate the unique natural beauty of this area as only few others have.

A Magnificent Snowshoe Tour

Snowshoeing on the Alpe di Siusi
Our expedition begins in Castelrotto, and our goal is the frozen waterfalls at the Fröschenbach at the foot of the Schlern/Sciliar, not far from Bagni di Razzes. With the equipment which can be rented from both sporting goods stores and Alpine schools, we proceed first from the center of town (1,100 meters above sea-level) towards the Wegmacher-Hof, past the Gunser ski lift.

In the midst of the vast, gently rolling fields, we take Hiking Trail No. 6 to St. Valentine (1,205 meters above sea-level). The large, snow-covered fields resemble a glittering sea covered with white foam through which the individual farmhouses and hamlets peek like little islands. During this segment of our hike, we can make use of the trails and paths or test our snowshoe equipment farther up and to the left along the forest edge and thus familiarize ourselves with it. From the little St. Valentine Church, we proceed via the forest trails down towards Siusi allo Sciliar (Trotz) and continue to Bagni di Razzes (1,220 meters above sea-level).
