Farmers' Gardens

Harmony of Beauty and Utility

Farmer's market
Almost every farmstead in the Sciliar region has its own garden. It's usually located near the farmhouse in a level and sunny spot protected from the wind. Its size can vary greatly, and depends more on the farmer's (or his wife's) love of horticulture than the shear size of the farm as a whole. But because time is scarce, the garden's utility is of more importance than the fun of gardening. Nevertheless, farm gardens seldom lack a certain poetry and grace, and there's always enough room for a few flowers, blossoming herbs, or bushes. And because gardening is a popular topic of conversation among farmers' wives, they frequently swap bulbs and seeds and ask each other for advice. Particular importance is attached to the observance of traditional horticultural rules (such as those which attempt to take lunar phases into consideration in determining the optimal planting time). The loving care and attention which these gardens receive is reflected by the results, which you can inspect for yourself at the traditional farmer's markets in Siusi, Castelrotto and Fiè.

Fresh from the Farm to Your Table

Apples from South Tyrol
For centuries, the farms of South Tyrol have delivered outstanding quality. Several farmers have now re-established the tradition of the direct marketing of their own products. Our farmers have always been open for new ideas and change, and have masterfully understood how to adapt the cultivation of the land to shifting demands. Today, it is still taken for granted that the homestead is always passed on to the next generation.
